How to Wash Cashmere
Knowing how to wash cashmere properly will help your cashmere garments last a lifetime. We produce our cashmere items in short runs to make them as exclusive and sustainable as possible; so knowing how to care for your cashmere will maintain its appearance wear after wear.
Should you wash cashmere?
With cashmere, it’s advisable to not wash it too often. After about three to four wears, you can consider washing but if you think you can get away with a little less then this will help to keep the fibres strong and looking beautiful for even longer. Accessories like cashmere scarves or coatigans can probably be washed less than a cashmere sweater but, of course, this is entirely up to you.
Before washing cashmere:
You will need to use a mild washing detergent or a cashmere shampoo when washing cashmere. The detergent needs to be gentle enough for the cashmere. Harsh chemicals can cause cashmere to pile, bristle or lose colour. Look for organic ingredients and avoid chemicals such as silicones or sulphates. If in doubt, invest in a good cashmere shampoo as you know you’re getting the right cleaner for your cashmere.
How to hand wash cashmere:
-
Fill a bowl with lukewarm water (around 35 degrees) and add the cashmere shampoo or gentle detergent
-
Turn your garment inside out and gently submerge it in the water
-
Let it soak for 5-10 minutes
-
Then rinse your cashmere in cold water
-
Gently squeeze your cashmere to remove excess water, but do not wring. *Remember, treat your cashmere gently through every step
-
Lay your cashmere onto a clean, dry towel and gently roll your garment in the towel to remove the excess water, pressing down with your palms
-
Unravel the towel and reshape your cashmere before laying flat to dry
-
Dry away from direct sunlight to avoid colour saturation
What else to consider when washing cashmere:
Before and after washing your cashmere, you can give it a gentle brush with a cashmere comb. Regularly combing cashmere will stop piling or bobbling, keeping your cashmere sweaters, cardigans and loungewear soft and beautiful.
When your cashmere has dried, fold it away carefully, rather than hang it as this also helps to maintain its shape. You can find more advice in our guide to storing cashmere.
