Is Cashmere Itchy?

In summary, no, cashmere is not itchy. Cashmere is super-soft and smooth to touch. Newborn babies can be wrapped in cashmere with no negative reaction to their gentle skin. Someone might experience itchiness with other wools, however with cashmere it is ultra-fine with silky softness, which will provide luxury comfort all year round.

Cashmere comes from a goat’s fine undercoat which is far softer and finer than other fibres, our garments at Loop are 100% Grade A cashmere, the finest available. If your cashmere is itchy, then it might be of a lower grade and could feel as itchy as sheep’s wool.

Cashmere is famed for its softness. The fibres that make up its composition have an extremely fine diameter, but it is not just the diameter of the hairs that give them their legendary softness – it is their bumpiness.

As strange as it sounds, the long, wispy hairs are full of bumps, bumps that cling together so closely, there is no risk of any fibres sticking out and irritating your skin. Other fibres such as angora, are much straighter, and these are ones commonly known for being itchy to wear.

Does Cashmere Get Softer Over Time?

Just like fine wine, cashmere, if looked after properly, only gets better with age.  Its natural fibres are highly durable and long-lasting; meaning you won’t have to replace your garments often. The natural wear and wash cycle will soften cashmere gently over time.  This is often why nothing feels as soft as the old favourite cashmere sweater you’ve had in your wardrobe for years.
